Treatments, chemicals may contribute to hair loss

Little telltale signs such as split ends, easy breakage and inexplicable excessive hair loss can add up to bigger or costlier problems if they are ignored, hair experts say.

Each year, people spend hundreds of dollars on products and processes to make their hair look its best, but overuse and misuse can do more damage to hair than leaving it alone.

A lack of nutrients in the diet can contribute to hair discoloration or patchy hair loss. This is more likely to occur in poor countries, said Adrian Guevara, a dermatologist in El Paso who treats hair problems.

“The main cause of hair problems in our area has to do with the use of harsh chemicals and hair straighteners on hair,” he said. “In El Paso, this is what I’ve seen the most often.”

Some hair loss is normal because hair sheds, but excessive hair loss can be a sign of trouble.

Guevara said alopecia areata — an autoimmune disease that affects hair — is another cause of hair problems.

Highly chemical oriented hair care products will result in hair loss, if used for longer span of time. The side effects they post are sometimes very critical.
